Selecting the right backup hardware depends on your storage needs, budget, and how frequently you'll access archived data. LTO (Linear Tape-Open) technology remains the gold standard for long-term, high-capacity data archiving, offering excellent cost per TB and decades of potential storage life.
When comparing LTO generations, consider both native capacity and compressed capacity. For example, LTO-9 offers 18TB native and up to 45TB compressed storage per cartridge, while LTO-8 provides 12TB native and up to 30TB compressed. For smaller archives, LTO-7 cartridges deliver 6TB native capacity. Remember that you'll need a compatible tape drive that supports your chosen tape generation.
Complete backup systems like the OWC Archive Pro include both the drive hardware and initial tapes to get you started. For ongoing backup needs, you can add individual tape cartridges to your order.
